container running time

Is there anyway for a session bean to interogate the container, so that it can know how long the container has been running for, or even how long the session bean has been deployed?

no, I don't think so right now, however that would indeed be useful information. You do have the server start time available though => if you start your app with JBoss (not using hot-deploy to deploy them much later), the value is the same.
