Sending messages between JBoss 3.2.3 and 4.0.x

I have a requirement to integrate 2 applications, running on separate JBoss versions, via a separate JMS server.

One application is running on JBoss 3.2.3, the other will be running on JBoss 4.0.3. Information needs to be communicated between the two applications. (e.g. a message will be generated from one app and sent to the other one, where it will be picked up and processed by an MDB.)
For security reasons, there must be a physical separation between the deployed app servers, so the intention was to deploy an instance of JBoss stripped down to run JBoss MQ only on an intermediate staging server.
However, from looking at some of the few posts on scenarios such as this, there are likely to be some class serialization problems. Has anybody implemented a similar architecture? Is it a viable proposition? Can multiple versions of JBossMQ be deployed in the one environment, or would it be viable to use JBoss Messaging 1.0 on the intermediate server.

      Thanks,

      Oisín.
