what does 'adaptor' means in source code of jmx?

the conception of jmx of jboss is often refered.But in jmx spec there is no the correlative noun.Can I get the explaination here?

An adaptor is a connector.
It allows different protocols to use the MBeanServer.

Look at number 2 on this list in the JMX1.5 section.
