15. Re: JBoss+Tomcat Running as a Service
hswong Mar 28, 2002 4:12 AM (in response to nightowl)Hi,
I was trying the example given and adjusted the parameters to my local settings (as per the sample given in http://www.hta-bi.bfh.ch/Projects/aaps/docbook_html/x794.html
), but it fails to start up.
When starting up the service, it says
"The service did not return an error. This could be an internal Windows error or internal service error. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."
The server logs were not written to at all. Is there some way to retrieve any errors caused by the Service? -

pajama Apr 21, 2002 4:40 PM (in response to nightowl)You can get javants.exe from here:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/jboss/contrib/ntservice/bin/
Could somebody post the properties file for JBoss3.0.0RC1?
Thanks in advance. -
21. Re: JBoss+Tomcat Running as a Service
matthew.james May 14, 2002 2:51 AM (in response to nightowl)I've been playing around with javants (on Win2K) and have been able to get both JBoss 2.44 and 3.0 to start up. Once they are up things seem to work fine, but I'm not sure about the shut down.
If I run either version in a command window and then stop them (by pressing Ctrl-C), JBoss goes through a controlled shutdown process. Both the startup and shutdown are logged.
If I use javants, the startup seems normal and is logged. However if I stop the service there is no logging of the shutdown. It seems that stopping javants just 'kills' the server (probably by stopping the JVM).
Although this 'works' (ie JBoss is no longer there and then re-starts with no problems) I am concerned that the regular shutdown doesn't seem to be happening.
Has anybody else experienced this ? Does anybody know how to 'fix' this or if this is even possible ?
Thanks

fstarsinic May 16, 2002 1:09 PM (in response to nightowl)does the Jboss shutdown hook do that sort of thing.
could you do that and then shut down the service?
currenlty i'm using SRVANY to do this. SRVANY allows you
to use a batch file as a service and so i just point to jboss\bin\run.bat

A few questions:
- Using SRVANY do you still stop / start the service as per a normal service (ie the Services console) ?
- Is the shutdown process logged correctly ?
- Does the use of batch files include env var expansion ?
- Where can I get SRVANY from ?
There are two things I don't like about the javants setup I currently have:
- the shutdown seems to be 'abrupt'
- I have to duplicate the existing batch file in a javants properties file: this doesn't support env vars and means I have to maintain duplicate startups.
Maybe the SRVANY approach will solve all my problems ... :-)
Thanks

fstarsinic May 17, 2002 11:33 AM (in response to nightowl)i just did a quick search on google and found this link
http://www.pyeung.com/userdefinedservice.html
srvany is part of the ms resource kit i believe.
you need to do some registry work but not much to
get it to work (basically point to the batch file)
to start jboss or whatever).
install Srvany as per instructions
modify the registry to create the service
modify jboss\bin\run.bat to use java -xRS
(to prevent unwanted shutdown of jboss)
the created service you can call "JBoss" using srvany
calls \jboss\bin\run.bat
after that...
net start JBoss
and to stop...
net stop JBoss
use the shutdown mbean to make sure it's stopped
i think net stop jboss would work ok except for the
-xRS startup requirement.
i tried it without -xRS but then everytime someone
logs in, does "net start jboss", and logs out,
jboss stops automatically.
-xRS stopped that from happening but now it does not
shut down correctly.
good luck.
let me know if you liked it or have problems.

shirley222 Jul 30, 2002 1:12 PM (in response to nightowl)I've tried using the srvany.exe from the Windows Resource Kit, and I can register the service and get it to start without any errors, however JBoss and Tomcat don't seem to be running. Nothing is written to the JBoss logs either. I've edited the registry so that the Applications value is set to C:\JBoss\bin\run_with_catalina.bat. It seems as if it's not even attempting the run the .bat file. Any thoughts?

Yea. Dump srvany and use Alexandria's JavaService. It's free, it's made for Java, it's fairly well documented, it supports having to call two different classes for startup and shutdown as JBoss requires - plus it was the easiest one to get working.

Good luck! -

Do you know how to fix it? Perhaps you have found the solution now?
Thanks
