Connection refused in Linux

I've saw postings about this regarding connections being refused in Windows, but I'm now getting it with RedHat 7.2. We have a deployed application and client activity has been steadily increasing. We have begun to occasionally see the following exceptions on the clients ..

Connection refused to host: xx.xxx.xx.xx; nested exception is:
java.net.ConnectException: Operation timed out: connect
java.rmi.ConnectException: Connection refused to host: xx.xxx.xx.xx; nested exception is:
java.net.ConnectException: Operation timed out: connect
java.net.ConnectException: Operation timed out: connect

The boxes are not being overly taxed.....any ideas???

Is it possible you are running out of file descriptors?

These are where the FD max is set (box-wide)
/proc/sys/fs/file_max
/proc/sys/fs/inode_max (should be 3-4x file_max)

There was a bug in rhnd causing FD leakage, but I think that was pre 7.2. You may want to shut it down if it's running.
