2. Re: Problem configuring JBoss 3.0 RC1 for custom Log4j Categ
joel.rosi-schwartz May 3, 2002 3:59 PM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)Adrian,
That was useful, thanks.
I still do not have a working solution yet though. When I defined the jboss.boot.library.list as described I started coming up with Class Not Found exceptions which seemed to point at jnpserver.jar being missing. After I included that I came up with network timeout failures. For the hell of it I tried removing the jboss.boot.library.list definition and packing my classes into log4j.jar and lo and behold the jnp stuff was missing again. I think there is a piece of string being tugged on that goes beyond my understanding of JBoss internals.
Is this something I should be filing a bug report for?
Thanks,
Joel -

adrian.brock May 4, 2002 7:40 AM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)Are you trying to use an InitialContext in your
custom log4j classes?

4. Re: Problem configuring JBoss 3.0 RC1 for custom Log4j Categ
joel.rosi-schwartz May 4, 2002 9:06 AM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)No, they are actually a very simple front end for doing trace level logging. Very similar to what JBoss does now in 3.0. I can in fact get rid of it and use the JBoss trace, but not until after I am fully migrated over to 3.0. So I have a chicken and egg problem to resolve. It is simply unattractive to go through all of my code to make changes to the logging, only to find out that I have show stopper that prevents me from switching over right now.
Thanks,
Joel -
5. Re: Problem configuring JBoss 3.0 RC1 for custom Log4j Categ
adrian.brock May 4, 2002 2:06 PM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)I don't see why adding a class to log4j.jar should
cause a jar not be loaded or for network timeouts to
occur.
Can you post initial part of the server.log up to
first error?
You might want to start the config from scratch, in
case you changed something by accident.

joel.rosi-schwartz May 4, 2002 2:52 PM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)Please ingnore the prior post***, here it is again.
I have started with a clean config as you suggested and have attached the out put from the log. Thanks for your interest in resolving this and please let me know what I can do to help sort this out.
Best Regards,
Joel
*** Btw, I think there is a bit of a problem with the Forum. My last post was wiped when I went to attach the log file. Happened the other day when I was doing a preview. -

joel.rosi-schwartz May 4, 2002 2:54 PM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)Okay, so that did not work either, so if you take the prior two messages you have it all ;-)

9. Re: Problem configuring JBoss 3.0 RC1 for custom Log4j Categ
adrian.brock May 5, 2002 6:49 AM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)Hi,
Is that the output from the console?
You can get more info from server/default/log/server.log
I would expect to see the jars from lib getting loading
by the JARDeployer before it tries to load the JMX RMI
Adaptor.

joel.rosi-schwartz May 6, 2002 3:41 AM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)Yes, apologies, that was the console, I am attaching the actual log file here.

11. Re: Problem configuring JBoss 3.0 RC1 for custom Log4j Categ
adrian.brock May 6, 2002 10:24 AM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)I don't see any jars getting loaded.
Do you have
at the top of jboss-service.xml?

12. Re: Problem configuring JBoss 3.0 RC1 for custom Log4j Categ
joel.rosi-schwartz May 6, 2002 5:07 PM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)This is very odd behaviour, truly. First, so that you have an accurate picture of my environmenet, it is a virgin download of RC1 with the follow modifications:
1) run.sh has been modified to add -Djboss.boot.library.list=jaxp.jar,log4j.jar,jboss-common.jar,jboss-system.jar,useme-log.jar
2) I have added a stanza to log4j.xml to define a custom category and appender. I have attached that file.
No other changes have been made.
Now if I run with the additions to the log4j configuration I get the exceptions I sent on the last post. On the other hand, if I comment out the additions to log4j.xml, but do not change run.sh back, all runs fine. So it looks to me as if the behaivour is due to the extra stanzas in log4j.xml at boot time.
I have tried to attache my log4j.xml, run.sh, and useme-log.jar so you should be able to repoduce that behaivour if you have the time to investigate, but the attachment feature seems broken. Can I possibly email them to you directly?
Cheerio,
Joel -

adrian.brock May 9, 2002 11:00 AM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)Hi,
I tried the files you sent me and it works fine.
The server boots and I get the useme.log in log directory.
I tested with JBoss3.0RC3 (cvs head from last weekend).
Either there was a bug in RC1 or there is some other
configuration problem.

joel.rosi-schwartz May 9, 2002 1:16 PM (in response to joel.rosi-schwartz)Adrian,
Thanks for trying that out. Any idea of when RC3 will be posted downloads? I would prefer to work from a posted release rather than messing with getting a cvs at the moment.
Apprectiation,
Joel
