I know that other people have gotten bc4j projects working on Jboss successfully, so it unlikely a bug with the programs per se.

In case anyone else has this problem: it turns out that the problem was my JAVA_HOME was pointing to a JDK version 1.4 When I pointed it to a version 1.3.1 (either the standard or the version that comes with a full download of Jdeveloper) all of the problems went away and it works just fine. -
