JBoss stalls when deploying WebService

The first time I ran JBoss, everything started just fine. However, on subsequent runs, the system stalls for 3 minutes after putting out the following messages:

07:49:44,192 INFO [Log4jService] Started
07:49:44,195 INFO [WebService] Starting

After stalling for 3 minutes, it then completes initialization. However, once initialized, it will not serve web pages or respond to the shutdown.sh script.

Environment:

RedHat 8.0
JDK1.4.1
Jboss3.04 (same results with binary ditribution and source distribution)

Any pointers as to where to look would be greatly appreciated.

I found the problem. My firewall configuration through iptables was blocking all but explicit ports. Ports 8000-8888 were all blocked.
