Exploded archive - why is .ear/.war extension required??

Hi-
I am trying to deploy our existing application (which is in the form of and exploded ear containing exploded wars, ejbs jars, etc..).

Since we are currently deploying on BEA and Oracle9ias , the folder names donot have to end with .ear and .war.

Apparently the only way I could make a helloworld exploded ear to work with jboss was to rename the folder containing the ear to helloworld.ear, and all my webapp folders had to renamed to webapp.war.

Is there a way to get around this restriction - i.e. have folder names without these extensions?

This restriction appears to be hard coded into the deployers. I haven't found a way around it myself. The closest thing I have was to create a stub WAR file that points to my Web App JSP (it won't work with the Servlets and lib files).

http://www.jboss.org/modules/bb/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&t= have also tried to do it with an EAR, but it seems to to prevent refering to URIs outside the EAR. (This is according to spec).

I haven't found a way around that either.
