Using Hypersonic with TCP on 3.2.2

I am trying to use Hypersonic with TCP in version 3.2.2. I uncommented out the line <connection-url>jdbc:hsqldb:hsql://localhost:1701</connection-url> in hsqldb-ds.xml. When that didn't work, I tried changing the name to hsqldb-service.xml as in one of the postings. No matter what I try, I get 'connection refused' messages. Do I need to start Hypersonic somehow? I purchased the docs, but they don't mention anything.

Read through the XML again. You need to enable the MBean by uncommenting the end section.
