problem with memory admin

I have a jboss 3.2.2 on a linux server with 1GB of RAM, -Xms512m -Xmx512m, is the only service on this machine, but the memory usage on the monitor system report 920M, however in the web-console report Free Memory: 351 MB
Max Memory: 506 MB
Total Memory: 506 MB

this make that the server is very slow.

there are any tip to fix this problem?

Linux will cache things like files to the memory which will make it look as if all of the memory is in use, as memory is required Linux will remove the cached items and make the memory available to the application requesting it.
