Yes, the album structure is separate from viewing tags.

This is a classic directory structure - where child directories show as a preview (identified in some way as different than sibling photos). Windows does this exact thing with directories and photos.

Yes like windows explorer in thumbnail mode. Although I'm not sure what the pictures you posted are of ;-)
