How to run JBoss AS as Windows Service

I'm new to setting up JBoss AS on Windows, but I wonder what is the preferred way to install as service. I searched the internet and the forums for quite some time and I found two possible solutions.

Executing service.bat install
Using JavaService as described in the Installation And Getting Started Guide.

Running service.bat fails as jbosssvc.exe reports some strange error (Fehler in .EXE Datei). I already submitted a bug report for that. https://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/JBAS-6613
Java Service package seems to be quite old... Does it still work?
Please advise!

Which version of AS do you use? And do you see that error in a popup message?

I use JBoss AS 5.0.1GA.
I am trying to install JBoss as windows service by executing service.bat install on the command line - no graphical interface. I get the error on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. See my bug report for that issue.

My question is more general: What is the preferred way to start JBoss as Windows Service?
Using Java Service or jbosssvc.exe?

The last option does not even work at the moment, although the README describes the installation procedure in the /bin directory...

Using JBoss Native (=jbosssvc.exe).

Can you post the entire console output when you run that command?

That is the complete console output:
Error in .EXE Datei
No more. It seems to be broken. Maybe it is missing some kind of runtime environment like Visual Studio 200X to work.

I tried it on several PCs, with several download attempts - the same result everywhere. Currently I am installing another test system. Maybe I can find out more details.

How is jbosssvc.exe compiled / linked? Is it a 32 or 64 bit binary?

I think it's a 32-bit binary that can run on both 32/64.

Ok, I think I've found it. When the file gets copied, filtering was *enabled* and this probably alters the binary content.

Hi,

I'm getting similar problems running JBoss 5.1.0-GA as a service on Windows using service.bat :

service.bat install works fine
service.bat start does not

I've tried with the jbosssvs.exe file attached to the JIRA.

JAVA_HOME is not set. Unexpected results may occur.

You haven't set the JAVA_HOME environment variable. Set it to point to a valid JDK (1.5).

You have also not set any heap sizes so you are getting the defaults which obviously are not large enough. What changes did you make to the heap size entry in run.bat?
