Position of DAO with respect to entity bean

I have recently been reading a j2ee pattern book. It advocated a persistance framework. In this framework they made use of the Data Access Object to abstract away the data store and mechanism. They positioned the DAO in front of the Entity bean? Is this normal/best practice? I thought the DAO went after the entity bean?

DAO could be used for BMP entity beans if you choose that path. I agree that they should be after the EB as you normally want the transactional mapping to the "data server" object.
