JBoss+Tomcat JSP Precompile

Hi,

Every time I deploy an app to JBoss3.0.6+Tomcat, the first time I access the site is always very slow. I wonder if it's caused by compiling the JSPs for the first time. Is there a way precompile all JSPs after deploy? Thanks.

You can configurate the tomcat41-service.xml file. Set false in the file. Since you restart your server the .class files in tomcate work dir are kept!

Why don't you compile the jsp files before deployment? Personally, I use this solution and I find it pretty helpful. And very fast too!! :)

How can this precompilation be done? I'am looking for a "how to" but I can't find.

Another thing to prevent memory leaks and improve the compile speed itself is to use the Jikes compiler. This does not work in Windows as the Jikes compiler does not support the -encoding attribute necessary.

The standard Sun compiler up to j2sdk 1.4.1 has a memory leak that affects the Tomcat JVM - Jikes doesn't suffer from this problem. 1.4.1_01 apparently fixes the problem. I still use Jikes in Linux installs as it is a faster compiler - actually we use it for development code compiles as well.

Read about this and pre-compilation in the Tomcat documentation - especially the Jasper 2 documentation. Note that you are staddling projects and JBoss documentation won't help you with Tomcat configuration. :)

There are a number of ways, however, the load-on-startup option is the most container independent means. It is also recource intensive at start up. Note this is servlet configuration and covered under the servlet/JSP spec. See here:
