GC data?

I'd like to write some java code to provide data on GC such as duration, rate, etc. Does anyone know how I could do this? It seem pretty straight forward on some of the other App Servers.

There is some data provided from the JDK 1.5 on GC, especially for JBoss 4.0 via JMX. The JMX console looks pretty nice too.
