Why do I need remote access to a DS and what does actually h

Hi,

I discovered today that since version 4.0 JBoss allows remote clients to connect to a data-source by setting use-java-context to false. A colleague of mine tried it today and it works.

But, for what use-cases do you need this?
I always thought it is a bad idea to give a database connection to someone outside the container.

And, does someone know what does actually happen from the technical perspective?
Does this datasource on a remote client still support pooling, transactions etc?

I would be grateful for any clarification :-)

ah, thanx.

But, the FAQ says about a remote client trying to access a data-source:
" In JBoss-3.2.x you cannot, DataSources are not exposed remotely. There is an implementation of this in JBoss4. I would not recommend this anti-pattern."

This still does not give some reasonable use-case and it does not explain what actually happens. It only states that it is a bad idea.

So why did it appear in 4.0?
