How do I find out what is going on under the bonnet?

I've managed to get my first application up and running via ear deployment - and now I'm looking to tune/understand the runtime profile of the application - numbers of active beans/db connection pool status etc.

I'm aware of the /jmx-console/ JMX management stuff, but I'm struggling to find this sort of information within it. I bought the documentation set, and I've found the console settings showing overall memory consumption/thread counts but I can't seem to find pointers to instance counts for the beans/connections.

Can anyone provide me with a clue as to where I should be looking for this?

Your best bet is to provide your beans with custom container configuration and plugin your custom cache/pool implementations that provide statistics of themselves.

As for tracking open JDBC connections I'm not sure, I haven't looked at the connection pooling code or how pluggable it is.

Thanks for the reply - I'll take a look at what you have suggested. If I can come up with a clean way of extending the existing pool implementation I'll pass it back.
