JBoss xdoclet set up question

I found in setting up JBoss that
You have to supply a template.xml file to the jboss tag in the ejbdoclet taskdef.

I don't know why and it seems to be happy with an empty file.

can anyone explain what this file is and what is supposed to be in it?
