Will DNA be based on jackrabbit, or will it be a seperate JCR implementation ?

The goal is for DNA to work with any JCR-compliant implementation, but we're currently doing our testing with Apache's Jackrabbit.

Yes, it is definitely a major goal for DNA to connect to other JCR-170 repositories (and other types of sources). Indeed, federating the data is a much better model, so the data can stay where it exists (where it's used). Existing systems are not impacted (as they can still access the original data), but newer systems benefit from the integrated set.
