dataTable rows attribute

In the dataTable component, does the query execute based on the rows attribute?

In other words, if I am sending data to the rich:dataTable component, and rows="3", will it only execute the query for those 3 rows? or will it execute the query for the full result, then only display 3 rows?

That depends on underlying data model implementation.
Component itself queries data model for 3 rows with certain indexes (say 4, 5, 6).
What is your data source?
