How is checkbox used in rich:tree?

I have seen a number of posting discussing the use of a checkbox in a tree. What is the purpose of the checkbox and what is a typical example of its use?

Is it to simulate the +/- (expand/collapse) appearance?

I'm using a tree with checkboxes. My usecase is to gather information only about a subset of nodes in the tree. By adding a boolean flag to each Node implementation and a selectBooleanCheckbox to each node level of the tree of the jsp I'm able to get information about the selected nodes in the tree.
I think we've discussed implementation details in another thread on this forum, but I'm more than happy to give details about implementation details if you have problems.
