    demo broken using Safari 3

    henrik.lindberg

      Hi,
none of the demo examples that popup something (tooltips, menus, modals) display when using Safari (testing with latest beta 3.04 523.13)..

Are there Jira issues logged for this?

we've already posted that we will test RF under safary 3 only after GA released version. It isn't good idea to test under beta ;)

            Hm,
that is a bit strange - because if Safari comes out of beta with bugs that you want to have fixed then it just takes longer until the combination rich faces and Safari works.

Seems to be a general problem with anything that pops up - everything else in the demos seemed to work just fine.

I hope everyone interested in the Mac users using their rich faces app also report the issues to apple.

Did you surprised with fact that Safari 3 was released with tones on critical bugs.
Actually, Safari becomes better and better from beta to beta. So, we have a chance to thing about support for version 3 soon.

Sergey, not surprised that Safari 3 was released with lots of bugs, but it is looking quite good now - I mean, all (I ran most of them anyway) of the RF demos work as expected... So maybe it is time to look into why pop ups does not show.

(hint hint, nudge nudge :) )

The reason I am pushing is that users of our site are developers and they all seem to run on Mac's and like Safari. And our site is not operable without modal windows and suggestion boxes.

BTW - this is the error that appears in the log:
debug[0:44:31,507]: call getElementById for id= publishingWizardInclude
debug[0:44:31,507]: Replace content of node by outerHTML()
error[0:44:31,507]: Error to clear node content by innerHTML NO_MODIFICATION_ALLOWED_ERR: DOM Exception 7

                    And the log ends with:

debug[0:44:31,585]: Evaluate script replaced area in document: //
                    Richfaces.showModalPanel('publishingWizardInclude:publishingWizard', {});
                    //
error[0:44:31,601]: . Error message: Undefined value

What advantage does Safari have over Firefox?

                      Looking at http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

                      Hardly anyone uses it.

I am not downing Safari on anyone for using it. I am just curious as to why?

I do not consider that is comes with Mac a reason.

My guess: Safari has a Mac logo on it.

So we should all be using IE 6 or 7 :) (just kidding).

I think there is a difference between actual use, and users wanting to use Safari. For instance - at last Eclipse Con, Mac's where certainly over represented among the developers, and when showing our site, their first attempt was always to first try it out with Safari.

In the general population I think it is different with far lower penetration.

In our case, we target developers, and hence Mac and Safari users are important.

We would be very grateful if you have opportunity to look into the issue regarding modals/pop ups and if possible fix them, but I totally understand that the solution may be blocked by Safari issues (in which case it may be good to report an issue to apple).

BTW - I am not here to sell you Safari...
Hope you can find a moment to look into the issue, if not, I am not going to bomard you with lots of follow ups :)

                          Cheers
                          - henrik

Thanks just curious. My apps are all internal and I force the use of Firefox.

Parts of it do not even work in IE. Even though every user has the latest Firefox installed for the app, every single one of them still uses IE for all other browsing.

                            Damn users are hard headed.

I have to say, the responses I'm seeing to Henrik's post don't make me feel good about using rich faces.

What's the point of questioning whether Safari matters? I don't use it, but lots of developers do. A lot more than use rich faces, by the way. With this kind of flip attitude, I'd expect that gap to widen.

                                • 13. Re: demo broken using Safari 3

Currently, we have two kinds of report:
                                  1. richfaces-demo crashes on Safari 3
                                  2. richfaces-demo works on Safari 3 nicely

I do not thing, it is about the miracle. It is about the different version of Safari's betas

Sorry, if I was not clear earlier:
Rich faces demo works quite well on Safari 3.0.4 EXCEPT the functionality for popping things up.

Perhaps it is a simple thing to fix?

                                    Regards
