ReRendered regions locking up

I have a master/detail page with a rich dataTable and a rich tabPanel, each in its own h:form. If I click an a4j commandButton in the tabPanel which reRenders just the tabPanel, any commandLinks or dataScroller buttons fail to work in the dataTable, unless I also reRender the dataTable.

Is this normal??? Is anyone else having this problem?

Explicitly set the id for the table and all active elements (elements that produce the actions).
