XMPP integration - building an XMPP gateway

I think I'm interested in learning how to build an XMPP gateway. Any assistance would be appreciated - I'll see how far I can get along, given I have limited time and resources (doesn't everyone? :) ). Or perhaps it'll inspire someone else to help, too. Thanks!

As Kurt said on the original posting, we'll try to help as much as possible here. However, XMPP isn't on our 4.2 roadmap, so all we can offer at the moment will be best effort.
