Well pessimist locking should not be an issue, we are more interested in long term process, not so much on concurrency. The cool thing we need is to have two applications (say check-in and billing) having access to the same process

You can use jbpm this way. just make sure you have one jbpm instance that you access remotely or install jbpm with each application (jbpm core is 'just' a library) and point to the same database. When using multiple jbpm instances, make sure only one runs the scheduler
