I am trying to reference a data source running outside of JBoss. Yet, during the deployment, JBoss can not find the data source ?

Based on the information you have provided, the solution is: reference the data source correctly and it will work.

But seriously, unless you post your *-ds.xml file and any other pertinent information (such as how you reference the data source in your code, or what error you are getting), how can you expect us to help you?
