Are portlets remotable?

I am trying to see if I can invoke portlets that are running in a different application server than the portal. Is this possible?

It does not appear so. It appears that all portlets must be running in the same app server.

Please let me know if I am mistaken or not.

wsrp is a technology that enables what you describe. we are in the process of implementing it.
