how to plugin custom user preferenes implementation

Hello,

use case:
I have portlet preferences for a group of users and not specific per user.
Say group 1 has one set of preferences and group2 has different set for the
same portlet.

Is there a way I can achieve that ?

If I write my own custom preferences implementation is there a way I can plug it in.

Am I missing any details in my question ?

Seems like this would be a pretty useful feature as group preferences might be a requirement for many portal projects.

All inputs and ideas would help,
