Not able to use the jboss portal features

Hi,
I am new to the jboss portal.
I had deployed the jboss portal.
when i use http://localhost:8080/portal, the first page opens up but after that i am not able to explore other features.
The tutorial says i can login using admin/admin but when i give the username/password, it take me to http://localhost:8080/portal/auth/j_security_check%> and says page cannot be found. if I remove the %> sign at the end of the url, it says, Login failed.
Am i doing something wrong.

Also, if i try to deploy any of the examples available PortletSwap.com, the whole system crashes if i place the war, sar or ear file of Helloworld example with http://localhost:8080/portal giving a null pointer exception itself.
It works only once i remove the files and drop the database user, and recreate it.

FYI- i am using jboss 4.0.4, jboss-portal 2.2.1 sp1 and oracle 9.

Can any one help me resolving all this..i am not able to proceed because of all this so please help as its urgent..

There seems to be something wrong with your DB setup. What process did you follow to set up your oracle DB? I am using Oracle 10g but just connecting straight to it using JDBC and leaving all the portal specific stuff (users, roles etc.) to the Hypersonic DB.
