Using JBoss Portal 2.4 with SQL Server 2005

Hi All,

I recently downloaded the production release of JBoss Portal 2.4. I want to configure it to use the SQL Server 2005 database instance that I have running on a different system rather than the default Hypersonic database. But I cant seem to get it to work. When I execute run.bat, it gives me a bunch of run time errors and I cant access the JBoss portal page.

This is what I have done so far: (please excuse the verbosity...):

I followed the instructions in the Reference guide to set up the sql server datasource (modified the portal-sqlserver-ds.xml file, created a database - PortalDS, created a user, granted the user db_owner permission on the PortalDS database). Next I downloaded the jTDS jdbc driver for Sql Server 2005 (version 1.2) & copied the jar file (jtds-1.2.jar) to the JBOSS_HOME/server/default/lib/ directory. Next I removed the portal-hssqldb-ds.xml file from the JBOSS_HOME/server/default/deploy directory & copied the modified portal-sqlserver-ds.xml file there. Now when I execute the run.bat file, I get a lot of run time errors & the portal doesnt start.

Please advise. Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

Please post the stack trace for the first error or two that you are getting. (Do not post anything regarding the "Table 'xxxx' doesn't exist" errors, those are expected.)

My Sql Server 2005 is setup to accept TCP/IP connections only (not named pipes - I dont know if that is significant).

it looks like you did all that is needed for the portal setup. The exception states that your database is simply not accessible using given adress/port. I remember I had similar issues with enabling tcp/ip access when I setup sql2005. But I don't remember the solution at the moment and don't have possibility to check it currently. Try to google and check in docs - it should be there as it is known issue. Download NetBeans or JDeveloper and check if you can access database from the IDE - it's easier to setup and check like this than trying with app server all the time.

With a connection refused error, I would look at the following:

1) Does the port number in the *-ds.xml file match what the database is listening on?
2) Is the database listening on the port I think it is listening on? (Use tcpview or netstat to determine the port that the database has open.)
3) Is there a firewall blocking access to that port?
4) Can I telnet to the database port from the remote host?
5) Can I access the database via JDBC when I run on the same host as the database?

Thanks Peter, I finally got it to work. As you had guessed, it was connecting to the wrong port number. For some reason, my SQL server instance is listening on port 1072 (while I thought that SQL servers listen on 1433, at least sql server 2000 listened on that port, but 2005 listens on 1072).

Once I corrected the port number in the *-ds.xml file, everything went fine.
