Portlets aware of region?

Is it possible to modify portal to pass the name of a portlets containing region as part of the portlet request?

We would like to have a portlet display differently (i.e. image sizes) based on which region in the layout the portlet is contained.

You can use the Portal API and get the window property. Normally the region value should be available.
