JBoss Portal and Version Control

I am trying to create a new portal in one environment (development) and then promote it do another environment (staging).
What I can't figure out is when I create a new portal using the admin GUI, where are the resultant files written? Or perhaps it database driven? Has anyone encountered this?

I don't suppose you have any ideas what the best practice is in terms of creating a portal in development and promoting it to a production environment.

Not sure if it would make more sense to import the data to the production database or whether we should just recreate the portal in production.

I prefer to configure the portal layout using *-object.xml files. It is then easy to package the portal with the necessary files for deployment anywhere. The only thing I have not been able to figure out how to include in my package is user accounts and roles - there does not appear to be a way to define these in configuration files.

More of just the best practice on how to promote a portal configuration through dev --> stage --> production.

Is the best practice to define your portal in the *-object.xml files (with the limitation of not being able to define roles and accounts)? What happens if you have multiple applications deploying to the same portal instance? Should you have an .ear project that just defines the portal?

Or....is there a database migration path that is better?

Is there any follow up on the issue of the best practice of migrating jboss portal data and meta-data from test->staging->production? Do most people just do database dump/reloads? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

But I'm a newbie so I can't provide relevant information yet :-(

I'm quite astonished to see so few information about industrializing process with JPB. Experienced users : we need you :-)
