How to stream a pdf at portlet?

i want to stream a pdf report to a page, but some how i got funny character when streaming. below is the code i wrote. i got this works at normal java application, but not in portlet.

JasperExportManager.exportReportToPdfStream(jasperPrint, response.getOutputStream());

ctx.getApplication().getStateManager().saveSerializedView(ctx);
ctx.responseComplete();

the result i got is

However, if i use
JasperExportManager.exportReportToPdfFile(jasperPrint,"c:\\test.pdf");
i got the pdf nicely, but it save into my local, which does not serve my need.

So what is the correct way to stream a pdf? i want to do it like a popup message to let me download the pdf.

AFAIK straming binary content from within a portal context is not possible.

You got do redirect to a Servlet.

Can you give me more detail on "Portlet 2.0 resource serving"? Some sample codes might be very helpful.

it is pretty much like a servlet.

your portlet needs to implements the ResourceServing interface with the method

public void serverResource(ResourceRequest req, ResourceResponse resp) throws ... {

resp.setContentType("application/pdf");
OutputStream out = resp.getPortletOutputStream();
....
out.close();

}

in order to create an URL to the resource you need to use during render:

ResourceURL url = resp.createResourceURL();

The nice thing is that during resource serving you have access to the portlet request (since ResourceRequest extends PortletRequest) so you can read preferences of user and even the render parameters.

We have an example of resource serving here but it is for markup, not PDF:

I made a search in 2.6.4 released sources and it could'nt find it.

I beleive it's part of JSR-286 so it's going to be in 2.6.7.GA release. This is part of portlet module. So please search it in http://anonsvn.jboss.org/repos/portal/modules/portlet/trunk/

Hi !

I have the same problem as littleprince.

Streaming a PDF through a portlet with resourceServing works fine with the JSPHelloUserPortlet Example. (I'm using the bundle JBoss AS 4.2.3 + Portal 2.7.0 CR 1)
But if it put the code in a Richfaces Example i get the same nonesense as littleprince wrote:

Where lies the problem ? Is ist the jboss portlet bridge ?
I am using the RBasic RichFaces Project from the Wiki JBoss Bridge Getting Startet http://www.jboss.org/community/docs/DOC-12740.
