how to make ajax call when rich:panelBar select a different

I find rich:panelBar can not be configed to ajax-type or server-type switch , so I cannot make an ajax call when a different panelBarItem is selected.

Is it possible to implment server-side state synchonization and partial-page reRendering with richfaces 3.2.1 when rich:panelBar's onitemchange events happen?
