a4j:push in portlet

I am trying to use the a4j:push component in a simple portlet. I used the demo as a guide and after some troubleshooting I found that no matter what I did the listener was null. Has anyone used the push component in a portlet?
Or can anyone tell me why the component can not find the listener?

Sorry, I forgot to put the version. The version I am using is 3.2.1 GA

I was looking through the code and I am a bit confused.

The richfaces filter create the event monitor and stores a reference in the servlet context.

Now the push component looks for the event monitor but since it is in a portlet a portlet context is returned not a servlet context could this be why the listener is registered as null.
