scrollableDataTable height in percent

In a rich:scrollableDataTable...

When I specify width="100%", I get a full width table with horizontal scrollbar. Good.

When I specify height="100%", I get nothing (as if I specified height="0"). Bad.

Is this a known bug? feature? Is there a workaround?

Is there another way get a table with a horizontal scroll bar and the left-most (header) column locked in place?

Can somebody please explain how to create a scrollableDataTable which has a height no taller (and no shorter) than the contents?
