Posting this via an email thread about adding bittorrent features to Labs:

We can create the .bittorrent file for them. That's simple. They just put an element in their downloads.xml saying they want the file available via bittorent, or we just do that by default for everyone.
That way, they just check in the file they want to make available via svn, the Labs infrastructure does the rest. This really sounds like a shotoku template to me, but I'll let Adam make the call.

It might be worth a shot to see how it will affect the download traffic

OpenOffice is doing it.

Azareus is a decent Java client under GPL. Some of its code might be
useful

Not sure if there is a library with less restrictive license out there.
It is actually straightforward to create a bittorrent file with Azareus.
I can imagine developers doing that themselves and uploading it in the
labs cms.

You want us to support it in Labs? We can add a bittorent element to
our downloads portlet.
Adam, this might be a cool feature of Shotoku, albeit I haven't
thought it through, but what if we had a property on a node that
triggered that node to be available via bittorrent? Hmm.... my
gears are turning, I know you hate it when that happens. ;-)
Actually, that probably wouldn't work due to a brute force search of
properties for indexing. Maybe another element in the feeds with a
new template? (itching feeling in brain).

I think I figured how it works. We can keep the ballpark of download
