the rowkey attribute and its function

I'm playing at the moment with the listShuttle component. Can someone explain me the function of the rowKey attribute? I found this attribute also with the orderingList, the dataList ....

I assigned it to a ShuttleListRowKey property of backing bean, but this property has never been read or set at least during the render response phase.
