I just came across Shotoku and I find that the answer to this question is not clear. What is Shotoku? Ok, it's a content repository but can you describe some basic use cases?

Also, how does it relate to JBoss Portal?

Could Shotoku be used as an backend for the CMS portlet in JBossPortal?

rather, it's a common simple interface to other repositories - like JCR, Subversion or your local filesystem. That's the basic use case - when you need a simple and easy access to a repository. There are also things like resource watchers, integration with velocity, which further ease development.

It isn't bound with portal at any point. But we use it in the Labs portal as a content repository.
