validation !!!!

picklist=<rich:pickList
i have a pick list i want to apply custom validation according to a selectone menu

i have to validate the list the logic is...

if 1st option is selected from select one menu then user can select zero or more option from pick list

if 2nd or 3rd option is selected then user must select one option only from pick list;

NOW

how can i do that ?

inshort validation either custom or using required attribute is server side. can java script be used set the required attribute value to true or false??

how about to write custom validator for pickList? Custom validators for any RF components could be used as for any standard JSF component.

but custom validator is only called in case we select any value.
but if nothing is selected then it is not called
