4. Re: RSS feed not validating on In Relation To
igx89 Oct 8, 2007 9:54 AM (in response to igx89)This is very minor, but it seems that italics and quote blocks aren't being properly formatted in the feed -- I got incredibly confused while reading the first few sentences of the "Daniel Responds" post in my feed reader :)

5. Re: RSS feed not validating on In Relation To
christian.bauer Oct 8, 2007 10:19 AM (in response to igx89)I tried 4 different feed readers and I have no problems at all. In fact, there isn't even any italics in there. Quotes are marked as < q >.

6. Re: RSS feed not validating on In Relation To
igx89 Oct 8, 2007 10:29 AM (in response to igx89)That's one problem: the feed is putting < q > for inline quotes where the actual site has italics (see the second sentence/line in "Daniel Responds"). For blocked quotes it's also doing < q >, but that markup is ignored by the readers I've tested it on (IE7, Outlook 2007, and Google Reader -- popular readers!). My guess is that's because < q > has no meaning in HTML, and is thus ignored?

8. Re: RSS feed not validating on In Relation To
igx89 Oct 8, 2007 10:54 AM (in response to igx89)So simple! ;)
Apparently the real problem is that IE/Win doesn't recognize the q tag (Google Reader displays quotes fine in Firefox). There are lots of workarounds available, but unfortunately very few that'd likely work inside RSS feeds. My suggestion would be to use the < blockquote > tag for blockquotes (which should be done anyway, right?) and both < q > and < i > (italic) tags for inline quotes.
So, < q >this is an inline quote< /q > and
< q >This is a block quote< /q >
would be
So, < i >< q >this is an inline quote< /q >< /i >
< blockquote >This is a block quote< /blockquote > -
9. Re: RSS feed not validating on In Relation To
gavin.king Oct 8, 2007 1:04 PM (in response to igx89)blockquote *is* used for block quotes. q is only used for inline quotes.
(Yes, I checked the feed, it definitely uses blockquote.) -
10. Re: RSS feed not validating on In Relation To
igx89 Oct 8, 2007 1:21 PM (in response to igx89)Interesting... for newer posts (like "Response to Matt Corey") it does use blockquote for block quotes, while older posts (like "Daniel Responds") use q for block quotes.

gavin.king Oct 8, 2007 2:09 PM (in response to igx89)Ahwell, there was a bug in the Seam Text parser that got fixed a few weeks ago.
