I ran into that exception once (in a different context). I believe that particular problem should be fixed in Drools 4.0.1. See http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBRULES-1066.

Maybe using a newer drools version is all you need?

I am using 4.0.0 atm so I will try upgrading and see if that resolves it.
