Rerendering in Facelets template

hiya,

I'm trying to build a layout with facelets templating. I have a header, a leftside navigation menu and a content.
In my header.xhtml is a <a4j:poll>, wich is rerendering an element in the header.

Now I've got the file index.xhtml, which is using the layout. Somehow the header element isn't rerendering.

can somebody give me an explanation, why this doesn't work?

hmmm... does somebody know where I can the sources of the richfaces demo. I would be interested in how they realise their menu and navigation...
