Is the parameter of BeanMetaDataBuilder.createInject(Object); supposed to be the bean name? If so, why is the type "Object"? If not, how can I specify that I want to inject a bean with the given name?

Yes.

If so, why is the type "Object"?

The MC at dependency module level doesn't have the notion of component name being a string, that's POJO notion.
And with inject you can e.g. use MBean, who's name is ObjectName, hence the Object. ;-)
