Contains filter for extendedDataTable

I am looking to move tables from using the rich:dataTable to use the extendedDataTable instead as it offers a lot of useful features such as sorting, grouping and filtering. It appears to me that the filtering only performs "begins with" filters and I was wondering if there would be an easy way to create my own "contains" filter.

check for external filtering sample on richfaces-demo. It has been done for dataTable but could be adopted in the same manner to extendedTable.
