    Poor search

    jaikiran

I have been trying to find a thread in the AS forum for that past 10-15 minutes, in vain. I remember which forum contains that thread and who the participants are. So i go to the search page and enter in the name of the participant in the "Who" option and leave the search keyword blank. And then hit the search button. I get a validation error saying i am not allowed to search on empty string.

So how do i search a forum (or multiple forums) based on author name (without any search keywords)?

By the way, the search algorithm itself is extremely poor (i noticed it while searching for something else). Here's an example:

      1) Go to the search "page"

      2) Enter the search term "exploded deploymen"

Yes i know there's a typo in that word (missing t in deployment).

      3) Select "More options"

      4) In the "What" options select only Articles and unselect rest all options

      5) In "When" select "All"

      6) In "Where" select "All Spaces"

      7) Click the "Search" button.

      What's the result?

Your search for "exploded deploymen" returned 0 results.

Try a less restrictive search, make sure all words are spelled correctly, or try different keywords.

I know that's typo in my search string, but not a single hit for the search? I mean not even a single hit for the correctly spelt "exploded" word?

So i fix the typo and enter the search term as "exploded deployment" and get the desired article.

          Hi,

when I put "exploded deploymen*" then it found much more than "exploded deploymen" ...

Regarding to someone stuff - you can see that on profile page:

          http://community.jboss.org/people/jaikiran?view=overview

but true is that's not full list.

Actually, i thought about this a bit more. And this actually looks like a bug to me (in whichever search implementation that page uses). More precisely, the "Search Tips" page http://community.jboss.org/search-tips.jspa#basic says this:

This is the most basic search. Simply enter your search terms.  For example:

            black cat adoption

This will search for articles containing the words black,   cat or   adoption.

So if i enter exploded deploymen (intentionally left out double quotes) then it definitely should show me pages containing the word exploded or deploymen (even though it's a typo, i would expect deploymen to match deployment)

Yeah, i tried even that But for  regular community members who post frequently, that page doesn't contain much (just a few weeks history isn't of much use). In this specific case i was looking for a post (discussion) dated some time back in early 2009.

Or i guess, there's a bug in the documentation on the "Search Tips" page

This is the most basic search. Simply enter your search terms.  For example:

              black cat adoption

This will search for articles containing the words black,   cat or   adoption.

I compared this to the Jive software (on which this forum software is based) "Search Tips" page http://www.jivesoftware.com/jivespace/search-tips.jspa#basic and it has a different meaning to the search term. It says:

This is the most basic search. Simply enter your search terms.  For example:

              black cat adoption

This will search for documents containing the words black,   cat and   adoption.

Notice the "and" instead of "or".
