calendar - restrict dates?

Is it possible to lock down the available dates that the user can input in a rich calendar?  I thought that the 'preload' dates would do it, but they are not.

I want to bring it up, and only allow the selection of specific dates, or ranges (similar to how the calendars work when booking a flight -- they block certain unavailable dates)

and you could also control styling and enablement from the model.

Is there a usage example for the dataModel as well?  I see the interfaces in the user guide, but is there an implemenation I can view?
