<h:outputText value=''#{ (bean.someProperty==null) ? 'EMPTY' : 'NOT EMPTY' }'' />

It works perfectly now. Yesterday I lost three hours just trying to get this right until I gave up in anger and despair... So this really helped, thanks a lot.
Is there a way to see this kind of problem in the logs, like a warning that a component has too many children? -
