i use a binding on direction
with following function
int linecount =0;
public String getTooltipdirection(){
linecount++;
String lsret =
"bottom-right";
if ( linecount % rows > 10 ){
lsret =
"top-right";
}
return lsret ;
}

P.S. Just check additionally - it will be cut by upper border in that case if will be large enough.
